Skincare routine order: what to use morning and evening

By , founder of Eligenda Roma. Updated .

A straightforward skincare routine starts with cleanser, followed by any treatments and moisturiser. Sunscreen comes last in the morning, before make-up. If you use toner, serum and eye cream, the usual order is:

  1. Cleanser.
  2. Toner, if used.
  3. Serum.
  4. Eye cream.
  5. Face cream.
  6. Sunscreen in the morning, before make-up.

You do not need every step. Start with cleansing, moisturising and daytime sun protection, then add products for a particular need. Our guide to essential skincare can help you keep the routine manageable.

Why product order matters

Applying products in a sensible sequence helps them spread well and avoids unnecessary layers. The rule of moving from the lightest texture to the richest is a useful guide for many cosmetics, but there are exceptions. Sunscreen, for example, remains the final skincare step even when it has a very fluid texture.

Product instructions matter more than a general texture rule. If you use a prescribed skin treatment, follow your doctor’s advice about where it belongs in your routine.

The American Academy of Dermatology suggests a simple foundation: cleanse, apply any treatments, moisturise and protect, then apply make-up.

Morning and evening routines compared

Your morning routine prepares your skin for the day and includes sunscreen. In the evening, the main purpose is to remove make-up, sunscreen and residue, leaving your skin clean and comfortable.

Step Morning Evening
Cleansing Gentle and suited to your skin’s needs Thorough enough to remove the products applied during the day
Toner Optional, after cleansing Optional, after cleansing
Serum If useful and in keeping with the directions If useful and in keeping with the directions
Eye cream If needed for comfort or specific concerns Follow the product directions
Cream A texture and amount that feel comfortable under sunscreen According to your skin’s need for moisture and softness
Sun protection The final skincare step Not needed in a bedtime routine

You do not necessarily need a different cream at night. You can use the same cream and serum if they are intended for both morning and evening use and feel comfortable on your skin.

1. Cleansing: the first step

A cleanser should remove make-up, sebum and residue without leaving your skin feeling tight. Very dry skin after washing is not a sign of better cleansing.

Apply Restorative Cleansing Milk to your face and neck with your fingers or a cotton pad, massage gently and rinse off with water. The formula includes aloe, strawberry extract, shea and apricot butters, and olive and sweet almond oils. The Cleansing Milk comes in a 200 ml bottle.

Wash with lukewarm water and a light touch. Avoid repeated rubbing or using sponges if your skin reddens easily. The AAD recommends gentle cleansing with your fingertips, followed by drying without rubbing.

Should you double cleanse morning and evening?

It is not a requirement. Double cleansing may be useful in the evening if one cleanse does not fully remove long-wearing make-up or sunscreen. It depends on the products you have applied and the cleanser you use; wearing sunscreen does not automatically mean you need to wash twice.

If your usual cleanser leaves your skin clean and comfortable, there is no need to add another cleanser simply for the sake of it. Our face cleansing guide explains product choice and the steps involved.

2. Toner: after cleansing, if you use it

Toner is an optional addition. Depending on the formula, it can add a feeling of freshness, hydration and comfort. It does not replace cleansing, and not everyone needs it to ‘correct pH’ after washing.

Apply Rejuvenating Facial Toner with a cotton pad to your face and neck after the Cleansing Milk, without rubbing. It comes before serum in the routine. The alcohol-free formula contains chamomile, helichrysum and witch hazel waters, calendula and cucumber extracts, and glycerine. It comes in a 200 ml bottle.

If a lot of make-up remains on the cotton pad, revisit your cleansing step. Toner should not become a make-up remover that you use repeatedly until your skin becomes irritated. If you prefer a simple routine and your skin already feels comfortable, you can leave this step out.

3. Serum: treatment before moisturiser

Choose a serum for a specific concern, such as hydration or visible fine lines. Add one if your existing products do not meet that need.

Apply Global Action Serum using a few drops and light strokes over your face, neck and décolletage, morning and evening, after the Cleansing Milk and Toner. It combines hyaluronic acid in three molecular weights, biomimetic peptides, Myrothamnus flabellifolia, Kigelia and Quillaja extracts, and other botanical ingredients. It comes in a 30 ml bottle.

For help choosing a texture and understanding what a serum adds, see our guide to face serums. Research on an individual ingredient cannot tell you exactly how a finished serum will perform.

Spread each product evenly before applying the next. There is no need to time a five- or ten-minute pause unless the instructions ask you to.

4. Eye cream: a gentle touch

A dedicated product may be useful if your eye area has different needs from the rest of your face. Not every serum or cream is intended for use near the eyes, so always check where the product can be applied.

Apply Delicate Eye Contour Cream in a small amount, morning and evening, spreading it gently from the inner eye area outwards until absorbed. Avoid contact with the eye and keep it away from the lash line. It comes in a 15 ml bottle.

Hyaluronic acid, peptides, collagen and elastin are combined with caffeine, botanical extracts and emollients. Their cosmetic role concerns hydration and the skin’s appearance; one treatment cannot address every possible cause of under-eye puffiness or dark circles. Our eye care guide helps distinguish the different concerns.

In the Eligenda routine, you can use it after serum and before face cream, applying each product to its intended area. With other products, follow their own directions: when application areas differ, the order may vary.

5. Face cream: moisture and comfort

Cream completes the treatment with a texture chosen to suit your skin. It can help limit water loss and keep the surface soft.

Use Global Action Cream morning and evening on your face, neck and décolletage, after the Cleansing Milk, Toner and Serum. Take a small amount with the supplied spatula and spread with light strokes. Keep the spatula clean. The cream comes in a 50 ml jar.

The formula includes hyaluronic acid in three molecular weights, Pseudoalteromonas exopolysaccharide, biomimetic peptides, vitamin E, shea butter and plant oils. This combination is designed for hydration, softness and the appearance of signs of ageing.

Use enough to spread comfortably. If products pill under make-up, try using smaller amounts, spreading each product evenly and considering whether you can simplify your routine.

6. Sunscreen: the final morning step

Cream and serum do not replace sunscreen, even when they contain antioxidants or plant butters.

The AAD recommends a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, alongside shade and protective clothing when needed. Apply and reapply according to the directions, particularly outdoors: protection involves more than a single morning application. How to choose sunscreen.

Apply sunscreen as a separate step before make-up. Do not mix it with serum, cream or foundation in your palm: follow its directions to obtain the stated protection.

Adapting the sequence to your skin type

Dry skin

Start by noticing how your skin feels after washing. If it feels tight, review your cleanser and cream before adding more serums. A humectant product may improve comfort, while a richer cream may help dry areas. Your neck and décolletage deserve the same attention, provided the cosmetic is intended for those areas too.

Combination or oily skin

You may need different amounts in different areas: your cheeks and T-zone do not always have the same needs. Look for textures you enjoy using and consider the overall result. Shine and dehydration can occur together. This does not mean that sebum production always increases to compensate for a lack of water.

Sensitive skin

Keep things simple and introduce one product at a time. ‘Natural’ or ‘for all skin types’ does not guarantee that your own skin will tolerate a product. If you have known allergies, the complete ingredient list is more useful than the range name alone. If irritation persists, stop using new products and ask a dermatologist for advice.

Mature skin

Mature skin does not necessarily need more steps. Start with comfort, dryness and visible concerns, then add a targeted treatment if needed. A short, well-tolerated routine is a good foundation for mature skin too.

A simple skincare routine to start with

If you are starting from scratch, focus on cleansing, moisturising and sun protection. Cleanse and moisturise in the evening; include sunscreen in the morning. Add other steps only when you know what you want them to do.

Give yourself time to notice how your skin feels before adding another product. If washing leaves it tight, review your cleanser and moisturiser first. A serum or eye cream may be useful for a particular concern; toner is a matter of preference and comfort.

Masks and exfoliants are optional additions too, each with its own recommended frequency. Twice a week is not a rule that applies to every product. Follow the directions and your skin’s response, and avoid introducing them when your skin is already irritated.

Mistakes that complicate your routine

Changing everything at once. If discomfort appears, it becomes difficult to identify which product caused it. Introducing one new product at a time makes this easier to assess.

Assuming more product means better results. Thick layers can leave residue or make subsequent products less pleasant to apply. Use the recommended amounts.

Treating every step as essential. The sequence is a guide. Choose optional products to meet a need, not to complete a checklist.

Ignoring burning because the cosmetic is ‘working’. Persistent discomfort needs attention. It is not evidence of effectiveness.

Judging everything after two days. Comfort can change quickly; assessing visible fine lines takes longer. Timelines reported in ingredient studies are not promises for every skincare routine.

Frequently asked questions about skincare order

Does toner go before or after serum?

If you use toner, it normally comes after cleansing and before serum. Rejuvenating Facial Toner follows Restorative Cleansing Milk.

Does serum go before or after cream?

In most routines using fluid serums, it comes first. In the Eligenda sequence, apply Global Action Serum followed by Global Action Cream. Products with specific instructions should be used as directed by the manufacturer.

Can I use the same products morning and evening?

Yes, when they are intended for both. The main differences are sunscreen in the morning and thorough removal of make-up and residue in the evening.

How long should I wait between products?

Unless the directions specify otherwise, allow enough time to spread each product evenly before applying the next. If products pill, try using less and reducing the number of layers.

Does make-up go after sunscreen?

Yes. Apply sunscreen according to its directions, then apply make-up without mixing the two products.
