Choose less, choose well: why quality matters in skincare
By Emanuela Silvi, founder of Eligenda Roma.
An effective routine depends less on the number of products or ingredients than on how well your choices work together: carefully developed formulas, complementary steps and consistent use.

Do more products really mean better care?
It is easy to think that a complete skincare routine means adding more: more steps, more active ingredients, more products and more promises. Yet a longer routine is not necessarily a better one. Your skin does not need an endless sequence of steps. It needs carefully chosen products, each formulated for a clear purpose and used as part of a coherent routine.
“Choose less, choose well” does not mean limiting skincare to a set number of steps. It means removing what you do not need and giving more thought to what you do. This applies both to the way you build your routine and to the quality of the formulas you choose.
A good formula is about more than one ingredient
Skincare conversations often focus on a hero ingredient: a well-known active, a sought-after botanical extract or an innovative technology.
But a single ingredient tells you only so much about how a product has been formulated.
Ingredient quality is the starting point. What also matters is how ingredients are selected, combined and incorporated into a formula, taking account of their purpose and how they work with the other components.
A formula therefore needs to be considered as a whole, rather than simply as a list of ingredients. Eligenda Roma’s Linea Nobile brings together formulation research, patented complexes and naturally derived active ingredients in treatments designed for complementary skin needs. Across the range, the formulas incorporate six patented complexes selected to address areas such as hydration, firmness, an even-looking complexion, protection and comfort.
Every ingredient should have a purpose
A simple approach to skincare does not start with a fashionable ingredient that must be included at any cost. It starts with a more useful question: what does this ingredient need to do within the formula?
This thinking guides, for example, the use of biomimetic peptides in the core Linea Nobile treatments, selected for their role in skin firmness, elasticity and smoothness. It also informs the choice of hyaluronic acid in three molecular weights for hydration at different levels, alongside oils, humectants, antioxidants, floral waters and botanical complexes selected to suit the formula as a whole.
The aim is not to include as many active ingredients as possible. It is to make carefully considered choices about how ingredients, texture, cosmetic function and application work together.
A simple routine can still be complete
The same principle applies to your daily routine. Each step should have a clear role and prepare for the next: cleansing, restoring balance, applying treatments and completing your routine.
Restorative Cleansing Milk removes dirt and make-up while respecting the skin’s natural balance.
Rejuvenating Facial Toner completes cleansing, helps restore balance and prepares the skin for the products that follow.
Global Action Serum combines a concentrated formula with a lightweight texture, while Delicate Eye Contour Cream addresses the specific needs of the eye area.
Global Action Cream completes the routine with hydration, nourishment and comfort.
These five steps have distinct, complementary roles. Each treatment has its place in a planned sequence, rather than simply adding another layer of product.
Be patient and consistent
Choosing well also means reconsidering how you judge skincare. A single application, or the constant search for something new, tells you little about how a product performs over time.
Skin takes time to respond. Using a routine consistently gives you the opportunity to observe how it suits your skin over time.
Eligenda Roma therefore subjects its formulas to instrumental and cosmetic assessments of factors such as hydration, elasticity, firmness and an even-looking complexion. Whenever numerical results are reported, percentages and timescales must be linked to the conditions of the individual test: a figure is meaningful only in context. Quality calls for precise information, rather than an ever-growing list of promises.
Make thoughtful choices
Keeping your skincare routine simple does not mean compromising on care. It means having a reason for every choice, from the ingredients and the way they are formulated to the texture and purpose of each treatment.
Removing unnecessary steps brings the focus back to what matters: understanding your skin’s needs, choosing formulas that work together and maintaining a routine in which each step serves a purpose. In skincare, as in many everyday choices, choosing less makes sense when it also means choosing well.
